Come see how some clever engineers - and even cleverer microorganisms - are helping us to reduce our use of fossil fuels by creating energy and useful products from...rubbish! 'The Circular Bioeconomy' includes displays, activities and games to explain the different ways we can harness living systems to recycle organic wastes into energy and valuable new materials. Learn how a recycling plant works, feed a working biodigester, learn to identify intermediate compounds and help us test pH to keep our digesters healthy!

Making An Impact: What Drives Humanity's Impact On The Natural Environment?

All ages
Type: Interactive exhibit
This sustainable exhibit uses a 3D interactive 'IPAT' model to demonstrate how humanity's impact (I) on the natural environment can largely be influenced by interactions between population growth (P), affluence (A) and technology (T). IPAT (I=PxAxT) is a mathematical notation typically represented in 2D formats only. However, this exhibit brings IPAT to life in a 3D space by representing each of the 'PAT' factors on one of the three axis of a 'half-cube'. Within this half-cube, 64 smaller 'impact cubes' can be placed to represent the past, present and future impacts of the three 'PAT' factors on the natural environment.

Underwater Oyster Houses

The Solent used to have a thriving oyster fishery. We are working with UK and French scientists to design houses for oysters to live and grow to help restore our local oyster population. You will learn the difference between differnet types of oysters and see models of what we hope to put in the sea soon after this event.

Within the depths of the Black Sea lay many exceptionally preserved shipwrecks. Between 2016 and 2018, the award-winning Black Sea Maritime Archaeological Project (MAP) discovered 65 such wreck, including some from the Roman and Ancient Greek periods, in water depths up to 2000m. In this event, we will take you into the Black Sea abyss on a virtual tour of some of the most important and unique shipwreck discoveries even made.

In October 2018 it was announced that the world's oldest intact shipwreck, from the Ancient Greek Period, had been discovered over 2km below the surface in the Black Sea. This was one of 65 remarkable discoveries made during the Black Sea Maritime Project - one of the largest multi-disciplinary maritime archaeology projects ever attempted. These wrecks can only be accessed using specialist deep sea robotics, such as Remotely Operated Vehicles or submarines capable of withstanding the extreme pressures at these depths. This means that video or photos of these remarkable sites is often the only way that people can learn about these sites. However in this instance photogrammetry was used to accurately record every wreck site discovered, permitting the creation of detailed models of each ship. Using the power of virtual reality it is possible to faithfully recreate these shipwrecks allowing anyone to virtually dive on these amazing sites for the first time.
Grab your VR headset, google cardboard, or simply your mobile device, and join us on a journey into the depths of the Black Sea abyss to discover amazing shipwrecks covering almost 2500 years of maritime activity.
